September Moon Magic: Blood Moon, Corn Moon & a New Moon in Virgo

As summer winds down and the first hints of autumn start to peek through, September brings the perfect opportunity to align with the cycles of the Moon and the changing season.

This month, we begin with the Corn Moon and a powerful lunar eclipse / blood moon on the 7th, stirring transformation and release. Later in the month, the New Moon in Virgo on the 21st invites us to ground, set intentions, and prepare for the quieter months ahead.

The Corn Moon

The September Full Moon is called the Corn Moon, marking the season of ripening grain and the gathering of the last of summer’s bounty. For our ancestors, this moon lit the fields where corn, barley, and wheat were brought in — the staples that would sustain communities through the long winter.

In Norse and Celtic traditions, this moon carried themes of sustenance, preparation, and gratitude for the abundance of the earth. Feasts and offerings were made to honor the land and the spirits that guarded the harvest.

Energetically, the Corn Moon invites us to reflect on what we’ve sown and what has come to fruition. It is a time to acknowledge both nourishment and responsibility: the fruits of your labor, but also what you must now carry forward with care.

Corn Moon Ritual

  • Sit in a quiet, comfortable space with your intentions nearby.

  • Reflect on what has “ripened” in your life. What feels ready to harvest, to carry into the next season?

  • Write down one thing you feel grateful for, and one thing you’re ready to release.

  • Choose one item from your bundle to anchor the ritual:

    • Bath or foot soak to let the warm water carry away what no longer serves you.

    • A skin oil or anointing oil to apply your skin with slow, intentional touch, sealing in gratitude and renewal.

    • Herbal tea to sip slowly under the moonlight, letting the plants root your reflections in your body.

Close with a deep breath, offering gratitude for the nourishment in your life, and for the cycles that continue to guide you.

Lunar Eclipse & Blood Moon

This Corn Moon also brings the energy of a lunar eclipse and blood moon. Though it won’t be visible in our region, its energetic influence is potent and far-reaching.

Eclipses are cosmic wildcards, known for shaking loose what has been hidden, accelerating endings, and initiating profound transformation. While a Full Moon typically illuminates, a lunar eclipse has a way of pulling back the veil, revealing truths that may have been buried in shadow.

The reddish glow of the blood moon symbolizes both death and rebirth: the shedding of old patterns, relationships, or beliefs, and the initiation of new paths. Energetically, this is a time of release, but with an intensity that can feel fated — as though the Universe itself is guiding the shift.

Even if you cannot see the eclipse, you can work with its energy:

  • Spend time journaling what feels heavy or stagnant in your life right now.

  • Create a small fire-safe ritual — write down what you wish to release and burn the paper, or bury it in the soil to compost into new growth.

  • Rest. Eclipses often bring emotional waves, so gentleness with yourself is essential.

This eclipse energy will echo through the coming months, preparing the ground for the Virgo New Moon and the intentions you’ll set there.

New Moon in Virgo

Later in the month, the New Moon in Virgo arrives like a crisp page in a fresh notebook. Virgo’s energy is practical, grounded, and deeply attuned to nature’s cycles — inviting us to pause, reflect, and set intentions for the season ahead.

Virgo has long been associated with healing, service, and attention to detail. It calls us to notice the subtle shifts in our world: the slant of sunlight through your window, the first leaves turning gold, and the crisp smell of fall in the morning air.

This is a time to cultivate habits and rituals that support balance, health, and harmony in body, mind, and spirit.

For my ancestors, the Norse & Celts, Virgo’s harvest time marked a transition from gathering to storing, a season for gratitude and preparation for winter.

The Celts honored this energy by tending sacred gardens, preserving herbs, and weaving protective charms from the harvest.

Virgo’s meticulous, nurturing nature resonates with these ancestral practices: organizing, caring, and preparing the self and home for the colder months.

Herbs such as chamomile, oat straw, and lavender were used to calm the mind, support digestion, and strengthen spiritual clarity — aligning perfectly with Virgo’s grounding influence.

New Moon Ritual:

  1. Brew a warm cup of grounding tea.

  2. Find a quiet, peaceful spot — ideally outdoors to connect with the season’s energy.

  3. Write down 3 intentions for the season: one for your body, one for your home, and one for your spirit.

  4. Seal them with a deep breath, allowing your September intentions to be held in stillness until the Harvest Moon.
